amsterdam fashion week

At the 25th of January 2012 we had the great unperturbed to open the 16th edition of the Amsterdam Fashion Week.

We started our show by showing a film (made in collaboration with Jan Swienink & model Robbert from Tony Jones). While the mood-film was playing dancers (from the ArtEZ academy) arrived at the catwalk and started their beautiful dance while wearing underwear from the brand-new Sjaak Hullekes Sensitives underwear line.

At the time the dancers finished their play the first outfit of our new collection was visible for the great audience (around 1000 fashion professionals).

We are very happy with the result, hereunder you will be able to have a look at all outfits from the collection (pictures by Peter Stigter). A video & the mood-film will follow very soon...

We just had a very good weekend in Paris, selling the latest Sjaak Hullekes collection.

We came back from Paris and went directly to Amsterdam and Arnhem to prepare our fashion show, which is tomorrow.

Although women are used to take care of buying the right and nicely designed undergarment for themselves, men do not have much of exclusive underwear to choose from. Men’s underwear is all about it’s practical use, less about it’s design and comes only in a few different kinds of fabric qualities.

For some years now men are getting to understand more about their looks, they are more willing to buy designer clothing, the right perfumes, skin products and sometimes even make-up.

One of the only things which haven’t really been moving in the past couple of years is men’s underwear. A contemporary man should be able to buy refined and fashionable high-end underwear, matching his modern lifestyle and his care for his own beauty.

As a reaction to the developments in men’s fashion, and as Sjaak Hullekes’ companion, Sebastiaan Kramer, has been working for several underwear brands in the past it felt like a natural revolution to the Sjaak Hullekes brand to introduce ‘Sjaak Hullekes Sensitives’. A contemporary underwear line which suits a middle and upper-class men’s lifestyle. Undergarments which still are conformable, practical and basic but at the same time are made of high-quality fabrics and with the perfect workmanship.

Sensitives starts it’s first season by introducing the ADAM series. The ADAM series includes five types of basic underwear pieces Sjaak Hullekes believes are worth to be part of a men’s wardrobe, due to their history in men’s fashion.

It has been over a week ago since we came back from our holiday to Marrakech, but I haven't been able to post a new blog since the day I came back.

We are busy preparing the new Autumn - Winter 2012 - 2013 collection...

Yesterday the Amsterdam Fashion Week officially announced we will open the upcoming fashion week by having a catwalk show. So now I can tell you we have been, and still are, working on all preparations for this great event which will take place at the 25th of January 2012.

Besides that we of course will go to Paris to participate the Tranoï Homme trade-show

(20th - 22nd of January 2012)

Many new things for the upcoming year are ahead of us, soon you will be able to have a look at the new features of the brand...

And just before the end of this year we will have our official webshop and website finished...

But I now actually would like to share Marrakech with you all.

We have stayed in this wonderful suite next to the roof terrace of Riad Privilege by Lotus.

It has been an amazing stay, as because of Marrakech aswell as because of the good service of our Riad.

'made to measure' shirts

During this month we will introduce this new service at our Arnhem based shop.

The shirts are made by hand at our own studio, the Netherlands, you as a client will be able to choose out of 5 different collars, 4 different closures, 2 kind of sleeves, 4 types of cuffs and many other details.

After you have composed your own shirt you select your fabrics and we measure your sizes.

After a couple of days your hand made shirts are ready.

A new period in time, taste and environment is here to be discovered after the latest years have taught us all about our absurd egocentric way of living, our need for financial power and our global society which has been driven by the quantity rather then quality.

Our, once so ordinary, cup of coffee is now something we want to know all about. We ask ourselves questions about it’s past; how was it made? Were was it produced? Has it been produced in a friendly environment, concerning nature and human rights? Besides that we still want, even a cup of coffee, to be beautiful with a perfect flavor. We want to recognize the love it’s maker has put in it’s taste, looks and aromas of this cup of coffee.

This time of changes makes us as a costumer more aware of all we are doing and due to this more conscious of all our purchases. We have become more critical of the products we buy, but still with a positive way of thinking. The past, driven by its mass-consuming mindset, is left behind and gives way for a period in our society which revolves around quality; quality of the products, quality of their makers and the extra quality the product can bring into our own life.

Dutch designer Sjaak Hullekes has been driven by tailoring and quality in his designs since the beginning of the Sjaak Hullekes brand. Quality, hand-made features and especially the love for his products are one of the most important things to him while designing a new collection.
In his collections Hullekes aspires to give each item it’s own unique sense of style, concerning minimal ingredients, to create an item fitting for people with a similar feel for love and quality as he has. Making the perfect combination between the practical use of fashion and the so important looks of it.

The spring and summer season of 2012 will bring you limited handmade and hand painted items. While in previous seasons Sjaak Hullekes showed hand stitched details on the inside of the items; this season he shows these on the outside too. Raglan sleeves have beautiful French seams shown on the outside, carefully stitched by hand onto the items. The exterior detailing is also applied on side seams, at women polo’s at collars and at more items throughout the collection. These hand stitched parts reveal the sensitivity of the product, but also the sensitivity of it’s wearer. It tells us all about love, about quality and about our fragile society.
An important part of this collection are the limited hand painted items. These garments have been painted with stripes or sometimes even fully painted in one or several colors as a finish to the already constructed garment. As the items are hand painted and the production is limited up to 30 pieces per items, each item is unique and fits in society’s new way of appreciating quality and craftsmanship.

Natural fibers such as cottons, linens and silk are the base of Sjaak Hullekes’ collection. Natural soft and delicate hues are spread throughout the collection next to browns, navy’s and whites to create a wardrobe suitable for every day and every occasion. The fabrics qualities and colors in this collection are a direct translation of Sjaak Hullekes’ love for nature, as nature is something to inspire us all especially those who are living in our planet’s big metropolitan city’s.

The spring/summer collection includes a total look wardrobe, including blazers, trousers, shorts, shirts, polo’s, t-shirts and shoes.
Two years after the revolutionary male ballerina from his spring/summer 2009 collection, which has been shown in publications all over the world, Sjaak Hullekes brings you, among other shoes, a new variation of this ballerina.
Sjaak Hullekes decided to fulfill this need for a total wardrobe to a further extent by designing for women too, so new this season are the addition women’s wear items. In the past Sjaak Hullekes men’s wear items have frequently been bought by women and have been used for many editorials in magazines like the Dutch and French ELLE. This ongoing request from the women’s market made the need for starting a women’s line even bigger. Sjaak is proud to now introduce this women’s section which includes dresses, skirts, polo’s, shirts, blazers, trousers and shoes all with similar features and feel as the men’s collection.

Sjaak Hullekes’ big fascination for the group of VéloSoleX and Puch riding working-class boys from the mid-60’s, became his main focus for his latest collection. Their way of dressing, in combination with the natural dandyish style of Sjaak Hullekes and his passion for the country-live turned-out to be his spring/summer 2011 collection.

The collection brings you nostalgic summer feelings. It gives the feeling of rinding your vintage motorcycle, through golden cornfields, along blooming lavender, on your way to go to your favorite abandoned beach, where you can smell the heath of the day and the salt from the sea, but above all; which is a place to enjoy life. As a characteristic of Sjaak Hullekes’ collections also this collection creates ways to escape from your daily cares and hectic lives, wearable at every occasion.

Stitched-on pockets with pocket flaps and buttons, a variation of checks and striped fabrics, denims and open knits shows you the 60’s youth cultures. Combinations of fabrics, the fit of the items and subtile detailing are bringing a modern and dandy touch to the collection.
After several seasons; hand-stitched detailing and French seams became a typical Sjaak Hullekes handwriting, which makes the items as interesting from the inside as they are from the outside.

Inspired by the colors of the country fields, the sun and the sea Sjaak created a color palette, to bring the wearer the warmth of summer on a continues level. Many variations of whites, blues and sand-color-browns in combination with warm oranges and yellows creates nostalgic masculinity needed to succeed as a man in modern times.

What cannot be missed in Sjaak Hullekes’ collections is his refined sense for fabrics, high quality cottons, sometimes thin or even transparent, soft or coated which represent the global behaviors of men are the base for this collection. As being last year's winner of the Mercedes-Benz Dutch Fashion Award Sjaak Hullekes will be presented during the upcoming Résidence de la mode in the city of The Hague.

Résidence de la mode will be held from October 28th - November 7th.
On the 5th of November this years Dutch Fashion Awards will be presenting it's nominees and... last year's winner Sjaak Hullekes. (entrance by invitation only)

Part of the Résidence de la mode is also the Gallery Store.
Of course Sjaak Hullekes items will be sold in this great shop, which is opened from October 29th until the end of December. This will be your chance to get Sjaak Hullekes suits, shirt and more specially made for this occasion.
